Cllr. Malcolm Byrne has called for plans to be put in place for the Skate Park at Gorey Town Park to be extended just months after its official opening. The €250,000 park has been phenomenally successful since it opened and skaters from all over the southeast have travelled to use it.

Malcolm was involved in helping to secure Department of Environment funding for the project and believes that the level of usage demands that planning begins now to expand the facility.

He pointed out -
"The skate park is a popular addition to the town and regularly is quite crowded. In addition to facilitating local young people, it is beginning to become a tourist attraction. We should build on this. There is no reason as to why we could not look at having Ireland's largest skate park in a few years' time. I always knew it would be popular but the fact that it is already too small means that we need to realise the long term potential of this facility" He will be raising the matter at the next town council meeting and is urging support for the idea that Gorey become the capital of Irish skateboarding.

January 18th 2007

ROSPA are to be here today to inspect the skatepark. All being well and with the insurance company hopefully approving it too, the skatepark could be offically opened ASAP. Some details still to be worked out but...Keep an eye here for more news.

January 9th 2007

We met with the Co. Council and some engineers and the Town manager to discuss the project now that its coming to an end soon. Issues we talked about were access, insurance, landscaping, events, grand opening etc. As the skatepark is still a biulding site and so much of the ground around it is very wet and muddy, the contractors feel the soakpit area which is a huge pond at the moment wont be finished until March/ April until it dries up a bit. The same goes for some of the area outside the skatepark itself. Very wet and muddy. A footpath is still to be laid from the existing town park footpath up to the entrance gate. Good news is that they hope ROSPA will be here next week some time to inspect the project and all being well, give it their certificate of approval.

January 8th 2007

Work resumes on Gorey skatepark. Duracrete the concrete specialists that should have been here before christmas have arrived and are putting the finishing touches to the bowls areas. The weather could be a bit more favourable but it didnt stop these guys working. Within 2 days, they had the large bowl completed and moved on to the other parts of the skatepark.
